Meet Karen

Hi, I’m Karen Skidmore.

I know the very real dangers of how busy family life and working too hard can impact stress and health. In my 20s and 30s, I saw myself as a strong, independent woman; I worked hard at my career and being a mother.

I was a ‘head on a stick’.

When I fell ill in my early 40s, I fell hard and experienced the most awful peri-menopause symptoms for several years.

And being told to ‘rest more’ was a real challenge for me.

During my recovery journey, I fell in love with sound healing and embodiment work; discovering how to get back into my body was life-changing for me.

Now qualified as a Level II Sound Healing Practitioner and qualifying as an Embodiment Facilitator in 2024, I’m excited to share my love of sound and movement with you as I journey into my 50s and beyond.

When not playing my bowls, I run a small business planning and mentoring company, authored two books and a Menopause Champion. Over the past few years, I have grown a small team to support me, allowing me to spend time developing my Serotina Sound & Movement practice.

I love how my sound and embodiment work so beautifully with the practical, down-to-earth business support we give our clients.

If you are on LinkedIn, I’d love to connect with you there.

Why ‘serotina’

Serotina means late blooming; appearing or expanding in the evening.

Often used for plants that flower in the autumn, Karen Skidmore, founder of Serotina, deeply believes that we can bloom in our later years, too.

By using sound and movement to help us still our mind and deeply connect with our bodies, we have the power to unlock unseen patterns and embrace new pathways, without having to articulate or explain.

For many women, in particular, it’s an important part of our transition into our wisdom years; no longer needed for every day family life nor having to prove ourselves in the climb up the career ladder, our post-menopausal years in our 50’s and 60’s have the potential to be powerful decades.

Ageing doesn’t have to be done gracefully, nor is it something we should try to reverse.

It’s the time of our lives to bloom in the autumn; to hear the whispers from within us so that we can embody the essence of who we are.

Why sound & movement

Using sound and movement to heal ourselves has been around for centuries. From ancient drumming to dancing around fires, we’ve been using the power of rhythm and vibration to shift energies in our bodies and feel alive.

Today, we are connected to our phones, and our busy schedules run our lives, and it’s easy to numb ourselves as we tread life’s conveyor belt as the weeks fly by.

There’s never been a more critical time to connect with our bodies, to feel sound vibrate through us, and to feel stillness.

For some, sound and movement can be an excellent way to relax and unwind after a busy day.

For others, sound and movement can help still your mind and deeply connect with your body, giving you the power to unlock unseen patterns and embrace new pathways without having to articulate or explain.

What happens in our classes

Our classes are a safe place to leave the pressures of your day behind, relax, and find stillness.

We start the classes with a short body awareness session, using gentle motion and movement designed to help you get out of your head, calm the mind and prepare you for the sound session.

During the sound session, you will lie on the floor with nothing to do but listen to the sound of the Tibetan Bowls. You may stay awake during the session or fall asleep and even snore … and yes, that’s OK!

If you prefer to sit in a chair, that’s OK, too.

Still Your Mind.
Awaken Your Senses.
Come Home To Yourself.
